WHAT ARE NIGERIAN BUNS?
Nigerian buns are a popular snack in Nigeria, typically made from a simple batter of flour, sugar, milk, and baking powder, which is then deep-fried until golden brown. Often flavored with nutmeg or cinnamon, these buns are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are commonly enjoyed as a street food or as a snack at home, and variations of the recipe can include additional ingredients such as eggs, bananas, or grated coconut for added flavor and texture.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NIGERIAN COMMERCIAL BUNS AND NIGERIAN PUFF-PUFF?
Nigerian Buns are closely related to Nigerian Puff-Puff. There are however things that tell them apart. One is from their leavening agent. While Puff-Puff uses yeast, Nigerian Buns uses baking powder. Although in most recent years, there are Nigerian Buns recipes that has yeast and baking powder together as leavening agents; baking powder is the traditional rising agent.
In appearance Puff-Puff has a smooth outer skin because of the batter consistency while Nigerian Buns has a rough outer skin.
Nigerian Buns are crunchy outside but soft and chewy inside. Puff-Puff are soft both outside and inside.
Nigerian Puff-Puff uses batter with a medium consistency as its mixture. Nigerian Commercial Buns is more of a dough with medium consistency.
Now that we have understood the differences, let’s dive into our Nigerian Commercial Buns Mix.
WHY MAKE NIGERIAN BUNS MIX?
Making buns mix is a convenient way to have the dry ingredients for buns pre-mixed and ready to use. This can save time and effort when preparing buns, as you only need to add the wet ingredients such as eggs, milk, and butter to the premixed dry ingredients.
It can also be convenient for storage, as you can prepare the mix in larger quantities and use it as needed.
Additionally, having a premade buns mix can be handy for situations where you want to bake buns but are short on time, as it reduces the preparation and measuring steps.
You can also package, brand and sell to make extra income in 2024 without stress. I will work you through the process.

- Baking Powder: I’m using a double active baking powder. You can use a single active baking powder. I have a written detailed post here of the differences in these baking powder types.
- Spices : For a perfect Nigerian Buns, use spices like ground nutmeg, or cinnamon powder, or all mixed spice. They not only add flavor, they also act as natural preservatives.
- Salt: Balances the sweetness our Nigerian Buns.

HOW TO SELL COMMERCIAL BUNS MIX
Looking at how expensive baking materials are now and with lots of bakeries and cake shops folding up, making mixes like this and selling is a perfect way to diversify and earn extra income without stress.
- Know the cost of all your raw materials; and branding. This way you can determine your production cost, selling price, and forecasted profit.
- Get legally registered. Get your brand name and register it under the regulatory body in your country. In Nigeria, you will first do a simple Business name registration under CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission); then a product registration under NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control). With these registrations and license, you can sell to malls and cake stores without harassment. If you are in Nigeria and want a reliable source to help out with your registration, you can contact me
- Branding: Branding makes you look professional. You need to decide the kind of of package you want to use. Pouch bags? Or Airtight Containers? Your branding should include dietary preferences and list of all items used. In Nigeria, before you can proceed to do a NAFDAC registration, you must already have a designed label for your product. I have a detailed playlist of NAFDAC requirements my YouTube Channel.
- You might decide to sell your Buns mix by 250g per weight or 350g or 500g.
- After these first steps it’s time to market. Go to malls and cake shops around you, introduce yourself and your products. Utilize the use of social media platforms. HOW TO MAKE NIGERIAN COMMERCIAL BUNS MIX
Embedded here is a link to the detailed step-by-step video.
- So the first thing to do is to sieve the flour. You want to sieve your flour once. When I’m making pastries like buns, like chinchin, like pies, I only sieve my flour once. But if I’m making cakes, I sieve my flour three times. The reason why we sieve is to remove weavils and to remove dirts.
- After sieving, you’re going to be adding your baking powder and salt.
- Next go-in to add ground cinnamon powder, and sugar.
- And then once you’re through with that use a hand whisk to whisk this together.
- Now if you want to store this, simply use the lid of your airtight container to cover this and store for later. It stays for 3 months refrigerated without getting spoilt. It has 2 weeks shelf life and can be frozen for 6 months. If you want to sell it, simply measure it and put in your pouch bags and put your labels and resell.
